If you are among the more than 4.5 million U.S. families that are buying an existing single family home this year, we have one suggestion for your move-in checklist: Remember to reset the devices that control your garage door opener. Just as important as changing your home's door locks or keying, this security step will help prevent unauthorized access to your new castle and also protect everything in the garage including all those boxes you may have staged there as you complete your move and get organized.
Chances are the remote controls and keypad codes have been set up long ago by the previous owner. And they may have been shared with numerous friends, relatives, neighbors, service personnel and possibly the realty agency that handled the home purchase.
How to reset a garage door opener:
- Erase old codes on the opener.
- Reprogram at least one remote control.
- Program your vehicles.
- Reset the keypad (if you have one).
1. Erase old codes on the opener.
To delete all previous programming, locate the Learn button on the opener. It is located on the back of the motor housing, facing away from the garage door. Depending upon opener model, it may have a color LED light next to it. You'll need a ladder or step stool to reach the Learn button.
To clear old codes, press and hold the button at least 6 seconds.
CAUTION: Stay clear of the door as it will open and close when you activate new control devices.
2. Reprogram at least one remote control.
Note: Before you can pair the opener with your vehicles, you'll need a working hand-held remote control that is programmed to the new settings on your opener. That remote, once reset, will then be used to pair the opener with your vehicles.
Remote controls vary in button configuration and programming details. Following are common steps using Raynor's 3-button control as the example.
Setting up a new remote control or resetting an existing one are done the same way:
A. Press the remote control program button until the LED light turns on.
On the Raynor remote model G893RGX, that button is located under the visor clip.
B. Choose an open/close button to use for your garage door.
Press that button a number of times that corresponds to the type of garage door opener you have.

C. Press any other button to exit this programming step.
D. Press and release the “Learn” button on the opener.
The opener's Learn button indicator light will glow for 30 seconds, the time you have to reprogram the remote control.
E. Press and hold the button on your remote while the indicator light on the opener is glowing.
The garage door opener lights will flash or two clicks will be heard.
F. Test the programmed button on your remote.
The garage door should activate.
G. Finally, reinstall the visor clip on your remote.
2. Program your vehicles
Note: The steps below apply to vehicles equipped with the HomeLink® rolling code system (the most common system in 1997 vehicle models and newer).
A. Press and hold the two outside HomeLink buttons on the remote — releasing only when the indicator light begins to flash rapidly (after 20 seconds). Some vehicles may require the ignition to be in the “ON” position during the entire programming process.
B. Hold the end of the hand-held remote control (transmitter) you wish to train approximately 1-3 inches from the HomeLink surface—keeping the indicator light in view.
C. Simultaneously press and hold both the hand-held transmitter button and the designated HomeLink button in the vehicle. Release both buttons only when the indicator light changes from a slow to a rapid blink.
D. Press the Learn Button on the Raynor opener for one second and release. (Note: you only have 30 seconds in which to initiate step 5.)
E. Return to the vehicle and firmly press the programmed HomeLink button in the vehicle TWO times (press and hold each time for two seconds). The garage door opener should have activated upon the second press of the HomeLink button.
4. Reset the keypad (if you have one)
On Raynor keypads, the basic programming steps are explained on the underside of the cover. You should reset the personal code and create a temporary code for service workers such as painters, carpet cleaners, cable technicians or any others you would like to provide access during this time.
A. Reset your personal code
Press the Learn button on the opener. On the keypad within 30 seconds, hold: * and # (until keypad stops blinking). Enter: _ _ _ _ (new 4-digit code) Press and hold: ENTER (opener light should blink) If not, press again. Press: 0 (to exit programming mode.
B. Set a temporary code for others if desired.
First, enter your PIN, then hold: * (until opener light blinks 3 times). Enter: _ _ _ _ 4-digit temporary code. The keypad will blink 3 times. Press: ENTER again to finalize the setup.
